Sadhu Vaswani Center holds fundraiser to support the Bihar Flood Relief Effort

The floods this past summer in Bihar were an enormous disaster that affected over 2.3 million people. Aside from the 270,000 acres of farmland that were flooded and rendered essentially unusable, the residents of this entire area have been forced to live in unimaginable conditions. In its relentless effort to help the affected the Sadhu Vaswani Mission immediately sent a team of volunteers to help. In order to further aid the rescue effort, the Center in USA held a Cruise Fundraiser on 8th of November in New York City.

The cruise encompassed a leisurely afternoon of food and entertainment aboard the Marco Polo cruise ship “Temptress” from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Food served was the best from the mouth watering menu of “Bukhara”. To complement the buffet there was live music, dance and cultural entertainment that kept your feet tapping. All this and more was available to interested participants at a cost of $150 pp/ $100 per youth under the age of 25. The contributions from the event went to rescue victims of the rage of nature in Bihar.

In its earlier efforts to make a difference in the lives of the affected the Sadhu Vaswani Mission set up camps and free kitchens that fed nearly 15,000 people in Bihar. From feeding through the free kitchens, the Mission progressed into providing basic items for the victims to sustain themselves. The Mission even provided ration for about 1000 people. Costing about Rs 300 (USD $7) each, these rations contained about 14 items of basic needs such as cooking oil, daals, soap etc that will last a person about 10-15 days. Due to the bank strike in the nation and the cash crunch, the aid had slowed but continued to manage providing rations for at least 500 people.

The Cruise was just another effort from the Center’s part to become one with the needy and help. Participating in the mission would mean saving lives and hence the Center asked for contributions even if one were unable to join the cruise. If you would like to contribute to this cause, contact Mrs. Asha Jotwani at the Sadhu Vaswani Center at 201- 768-7857, Mr. David at 201-867-6500, or Mr. Ashok at 201-675-4570.
